Name: Kathleen Troia
Title: Senior Art Director
Hometown: Omaha, NE
How did you get into the advertising business?
I was originally going to study fashion design and merchandising, but after taking a few classes, I knew it wasn’t for me. I had always resisted going in to advertising, as it never really appealed to me – growing up with a father in the industry, it seemed so far away from my fine arts background. Feeling at a loss for my future, my dad gently pushed me into taking a few commercial art classes at Metro Community College, just to see if anything clicked – and it did from day one. While I was finishing up school, I was offered an internship at my first agency and never looked back.
What’s the favorite/toughest part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is designing – especially logo and brand development. The toughest part is the potential for long hours and insanely short deadlines (although, I’ve accepted this as a challenge).
What was your first job?
My very first job was at Omaha’s Peony Park – where I worked in food service. My first job in the industry was an internship at a local advertising agency.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My dad told me stressful or difficult times always have a way of working themselves out. I have found this especially helpful with the ebb and flow of the advertising industry.
Tell us about your family.
I grew up in a family of ten – seven are in the art industry, five of which are in the advertising industry. My father was Creative Director of Special Projects at Bozell & Jacobs in Omaha and was a huge influence on us all. Even in his busy life as a parent of ten, holding a demanding job and his involvement in our Church – he found time to sit with each of us to draw (or teach us how to draw) and show us the campaigns he was working on. My mom was a kind, hard-working stay-at-home mom who definitely held our family together (and still does).
I have been married to my husband, Dave, for 25 years and have two kids. My daughter, Megan, is an artist and is working towards a degree in Graphic Design & Communications. My son, Jacob, is studying Business Intelligence & Analytics at Creighton University. They are both musicians – but they didn’t inherit that from me.
What’s something you would like to accomplish?
Becoming debt free – is that a thing?
What’s something no one knows about you?
I hate mushrooms.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I love the mountains, music, swimming and have discovered a new love for hiking
What are your pet peeves?
I dislike rude drivers and clutter.
What’s your favorite vacation spot?
What’s your favorite movie/book/TV show?
I don’t really have a favorite movie and I don’t like to read (whoops), so there’s no favorite book either. My favorite TV show is Parks & Recreation.
